Establish Responsible AI Guiding Principles

Now that you have aligned an AI Strategy with your Organizational Strategy, it is time to establish responsible AI Guiding Principles to communicate your organization’s stance on using AI.

The most crucial aspect to consider about AI governance is ensuring it is safe, ethical, and transparent. Safety in AI governance refers to minimizing exposure to cyber-attacks and operational disruption.  Ethical governance involves setting standards and guidelines that dictate how AI should be designed and used in a manner that prioritizes human welfare, fairness, accountability, and privacy. Transparency is also essential as it involves clear communication about how AI systems work, how they are developed, and how decisions are made, which is fundamental for building trust among users and stakeholders.

Here are vital principles typically emphasized in AI governance:

  1. Ethical Use: AI should enhance societal well-being without infringing on individual rights or causing harm.
  2. Transparency: There should be clarity about how AI systems function, including their algorithms, data usage, and decision-making processes.
  3. Accountability: Clear responsibilities should be established for the outcomes of AI systems, including mechanisms for reporting and rectifying issues.
  4. Fairness and Non-discrimination: AI should be free from biases leading to discrimination against individuals or groups.
  5. Safety and Reliability: AI systems must be safe and operate reliably under various conditions.
  6. Privacy Protection: Personal data used by AI systems should be handled with respect for privacy, including secure data practices and compliance with regulations like GDPR.
  7. Inclusiveness: AI should be accessible to diverse users and involve many stakeholders in its development and governance processes.
  8. Oversight: There should be regulatory and oversight mechanisms to monitor AI systems’ development and deployment.

Performing a gap analysis on the current and target state for AI governance is an excellent first step.

Five areas to map out are as follows:

  • Communication
